How to Remove the Background using Clipping Path in Photoshop?

Clipping path is a closed vector path, that is used to cut out the image as per your requirement using image editing software e.g. Photoshop. Using a pen tool you can achieve the desired result.

To remove background using clipping path in photoshop one should be friendly with the pen tool.

The clipping path is mostly used for product photography to enhance the look and feel in the e-commerce market.

Let’s Start! But first, we need a photo to work with.

Open the image file in Photoshop.

Quick Tip: Select Image with High Contrast it will make it easy to work on removal of background.

Step 1:

I have selected this beautiful mug picture. Here is a photo courtesy of Luke Porteron on Unsplash. (There are many wonderful photographs on the website that are license-free.)

I have cropped the image in photoshop before using it to focus more on the mug.

After getting your picture selected, open your file in Photoshop.

Step 2: 

Go to the tool section and select the pen tool which is above the text tool in Photoshop.

(Every tool has a shortcut assigned to it. If you are familiar with the shortcuts it will help you in fast results.)

Step 3: 

Here you can see the clipping path on mug has been created. (If you have a plain background you can use a quick selection tool for quick selection. It detects the edges by itself and gives selection)

Step 4:

After Selection right-click on the canvas and select  Make Selection option. Small dots moving indicated the selected area of an image.

You will get pop up it will ask you for feather – radius type 0.5 it will help soften the edges to give a smooth finish.

Step 5:

You can copy and paste the item on a separate image by right-clicking the selected area, and selecting “Layer via copy” to create a separate layer with the selection, and delete the background layer or replace it completely. (You can use the shortcut Ctrl + C & Ctrl + V)

Step 6:

There multiple ways to remove the background of the image. I prefer doing using a clipping path in Photoshop. The main advantage of using clipping path is not just removing the background but also you can change the color of the object and then adjust it as per the requirement.

After pasting on another layer, I have colored the background using shortcut Ctrl + Backspace.

It will take time to get handy with a pen tool but constant practice will help you to balance the cursor properly.
